5 day old humpback whale calf nestles under its mothers chin for security in the open ocean. Most predatorial attacks happen from below and instinct leads the calfs behavior to turn its belly toward the mother.

Known as the largest coral reef on planet Earth, the Great Barrier Reef is home to a vast array of species both migratory and nomadic. Due to the sensitive nature of the reef, UNESCO has authority in the area.

New Shepard Flight 3

New Shepard flew again on April 2, 2016 reaching an apogee of 339,178 feet or 103 kilometers. It was the third flight with the same hardware. We pushed the envelope on this flight, restarting the engine for the propulsive landing only 3,600 feet above the ground, requiring the BE-3 engine to start fast and ramp to high thrust fast.

Formed nearly 240 million years ago, the limestone karst formations stretch across much of China. This arch was once part of a cave until the back fell out leaving the shown structure. UNESCO now protects a part of this area. *China Karsts

Beyond The Fog

I waited for nearly a decade to capture this moment. One Saturday morning in the beginning of 2016 I up to a thick bank of fog and like many other days, I rushed to my computer to check the Space Needle web cam. It was dark out but I couldn't see city lights so I knew there was a strong chance because I could see a faint horizon to the East. Turns out, it was the day!

Whitsunday Archipelago

The beautiful white spine snaking through the water is a silica ridge created by an underwater volcano just off to the left of the photo. As the tide flushes sediment in and out of the volcano it pulls white sand out and pushes it onto the beach behind it. Whitehaven Beach is one of the top 10 beaches in the world and wouldn't exist without this intricate process.
